I had seen much of Fred-Debief-Crunchy-Crunch-Cut-Up. - Various - Fractal Musik N°4: Crunchy Crunch footage, and realized there might be an interesting video timeline of the various manifestations Talking Heads went through.
But, tracking down all of the owners of these bits of footage and followed by getting the rights of the material was another matter. Some of the early clips were obviously not commercial—the sound and image can be a little rough in those—but you can see the extremely stripped down version of the band playing at CBGB in those days.
These bits and pieces of footage coming together into a cohesive chronology morphed into something very different and impossible to predict. This was Mic Test - Talking Heads - Chronology (DVD) much a live band—at least until the late 80s.
The initial recordings emerged out of what we played live, what worked in that context and how we refined our skills playing together. For a lot of musicians in the digital era this is not always the case.
These days, the record often comes first and then how it is staged comes later. The Lester Bangs essay is also very much part of this time.
Other than some very specific references, it holds up amazingly well as a passionate and idiosyncratic piece of writing. Though his piece is in the form of a record review, it is in truth a beautiful existential rant—and I am proud to be in some way associated with it. Come to think of it, maybe many of these songs are partly something else in disguise as well?
With each iteration of Chronology, you can pretty plainly see what came before as well as a hint of what was to come—all easy to spot in retrospect, of course. It was just released in a limited edition, deluxe package containing Valzer DellImperatore - Johann Strauss* - Concerto Di Capodanno photos and a previously unpublished essay by Lester Bangs and can be purchased on Amazon.
Does this release have uncompressed audio? Location: My lab. He won't tour, much less reunite, with the Talking Heads, but he has no problem spending years on a DVD compilation? Christ, man, just do the freaking reunion One More Day (LP Version) - The Neville Brothers - One More Day Mic Test - Talking Heads - Chronology (DVD), while you're still physically able!
Even Pavement got it together for one. C6H12O6Nov 24, Location: Vancouver. SoundAdviceNov 24, Location: The Berkshires of New England. Can cross an xmas Mic Test - Talking Heads - Chronology (DVD) off.
Thanky OP! SimonSaysCakeNov 24, JA FantNov 24, Location: San Antonio, TX. Too bad about Dolby 2. That's pretty lame in this day and age. If this were just a documentary with mostly interviews that would be fine, but not for something that is primarily musical performances. Should be uncompressed PCM stereo. Location: Miami, Florida.
Obviously David must have done his commentary seperately. Location: Allen Park, MI. C6H12O6Nov 27, Location: US.
GhostworldNov 27, Watching the full set made me realise David wasn't really enjoying it. SoundAdviceNov 27, Location: London. There is no interaction on the commentaries on Chronology, not even Weymouth and Frantz. What is weird is that Jerry Harrison now sounds like Gore Vidal! Location: Chico, California. While I'd love to see a reunion, there's no point if Byrne doesn't want to. Having him go through the motions just to keep other people happy wouldn't be particularly fun to watch.
